The Best Meatless Frozen Burritos, From Breakfast Scramble to Rice and Beans

Americans really, really love burritos. In fact, in 2021, one survey discovered that more than half of people in the US would take a burrito over a romantic date. It’s not hard to understand why. Burritos are satisfying, customizable, comforting, packed with flavor, and unlike a romantic partner, there is no real risk of them breaking your heart. While preparing burritos from scratch is hard to beat, sometimes, we only have the energy or motivation to simply walk to the freezer and heat one up. If you love a frozen burrito, find some of our go-to vegan-friendly options below.

How do you cook a frozen burrito?

Frozen burritos were first invented in the 1950s, and they were an immediate hit with the American public. Back then, as they do today, people loved them because they were convenient and easy.

“Our burritos were very tasty, portion-controlled, easy to handle,” Duane R. Roberts, the creator of the frozen burrito, once told food journalist and author Gustavo Arellano, per Vox. “You didn’t have to worry about spoiled food—they had a long shelf life, and you bring them out when you’re ready to make them.”

Cooking a frozen burrito is simple. While timings and temperature settings can vary, it usually involves putting the burrito in the oven to cook for around 20 to 30 minutes. Microwaving is another option, and this usually takes just under five minutes, depending on the burrito.

What to eat with frozen burritos?

Roberts may have created mass-produced frozen burritos, but, of course, he didn’t invent the burrito itself. Burritos come from Mexico, where they are usually enjoyed alongside dips like guacamole and salsa, as well as refried beans and corn on the cob.

If you want to keep things easy, you can enjoy a frozen burrito with store-bought dips. Most guacamole and salsa options will be vegan. Alternatively, you could whip up your own. We love this recipe for vegan pepita-chile seed dipping sauce, for example, and this guacamole with pomegranate and cacao.
