Come September, pumpkins dominate, to say the least. Starbucks’ PSL has already made its annual comeback (and, unfortunately, it still contains dairy), grocery store shelves are lined to the brim with pumpkin-infused eats and treats, and the promise of Halloween sees the squash repurposed into spooky decor.
And while pumpkins are delicious in their own right, there’s another seasonal fruit that shouldn’t be overlooked: the almighty apple!

There are over 7,500 varieties of apples around the world, and the US produces more than 100 varieties. Pink Lady, Empire, Fuji, Gala, Golden Delicious, Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, McIntosh, and Red Delicious are the most popular varieties stateside, according to USApple.
Typically available year-round, apples really shine come autumn. Apple picking season varies by region, but generally, September is the best time to harvest apples. Ideally, “they should be harvested between late summer and late October,” writes Fine Dining Lovers.
Apple nutrition facts
You’ve likely heard the saying, “An apple a day keeps the doctor away.” But is there any truth to this centuries old adage? The answer is a resounding yes.

Apples are a good source of both insoluble and soluble fiber. They also contain vitamin C and the flavonoid quercetin, which has both antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. Pectin, too, is another important compound found in apples. According to the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, “Pectin is fermented by beneficial bacteria in the colon, which produces short chain fatty acids that may play a role in the prevention of chronic diseases, including certain cancers and bowel disorders.”
Research has also shown that eating just one apple per day could help reduce frailty risk by 20 percent. Another study conducted on 38,018 women found that consuming at least one apple a day could reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes by 28 percent.
