Helpful Tips

Puff pastry tip!

You want your puff pastry to be completely thawed but still cold when you begin to work with it. I like to let mine defrost in the refrigerator.

What apples should I use?

Really you can use any variety of apple that you prefer for these pastries. But I recommend using classic Granny Smith – their tart flavor is perfect for this!

Make it Instagram worthy!

Be sure to arrange your apple slices uniformly for even baking and presentation. Remember, visual appeal is half the battle in cooking! Don’t forget to score your pastry edges before baking too, to get that beautiful border.

Let the apple tart cool before slicing.

This is to ensure it holds its structure, giving you those perfect pieces.

Make it vegan.

This recipe is almost vegan as is. Just swap the butter for some vegan margarine, like Earth’s Balance, and be sure to choose a vegan friendly brand of apple jelly. Most commercially made puff pastry is already vegan, but it’s always a good idea to check the label. Or you can try your hand at making your own vegan puff pastry.

Eat these right away!

Variations

These apple tarts really don’t keep that well, as the puff pastry will start to get soggy when left to rest. So, I definitely recommend serving these treats fresh from the oven.

Ready to experiment with this recipe? Here are some delectable variations to try.

Add caramel sauce.

Try drizzling caramel sauce or honey over the apple tart for an extra layer of indulgence. Or serve it with a side of caramel sauce for dipping – like this vegan caramel sauce.

Add some crunch.

Sprinkle some chopped pecans or walnuts before baking to add a delightful crunch.

Give it a citrus twist.

For a tangier treat, replace apple jelly with lemon curd.

Swap the spices.

You can also play with spices – try adding some ground nutmeg or star anise to the apple sugar mix for a fresh, distinguishable note.

Make mini apple tarts.

You can divide your puff pastry into smaller pieces to make individual sized apple tarts. This is a fun option for a holiday dessert.
