I used the bottom of a drinking glass for smashing my potatoes. You could also use a flat spatula with no holes. Anything that you can press on the potatoes to get them to spread out on the pan.

Don’t Overlap Potatoes
Make sure that when you are placing your potatoes on the pan they do not overlap. You want each potato to have room as if they overlap you will find some areas don’t crisp up properly.
Cook Potatoes First
Boiling the potatoes first is a step you don’t want to skip. The reason being is it is going to soften the potatoes and get them cooked. So you can easily smash them but also it then allows for them to just crisp up in the oven. Don’t skip this step. Or your potatoes will dry out as they cook in the oven.

You can use any type of seasoning as you wish. I did a simple mixture but feel free to reach for your favorite spices. Cajun, lemon pepper, or even a homemade blend of spices work.
Oil
You can use any high heat smoke oil like canola, vegetable oil or even an avocado oil. Each oil will flavor the potatoes slightly. But make sure you have an oil that can heat well or it can smoke and make a mess in the oven.
Small Yellow or Red Potatoes
You can reach for smaller potatoes at the store, like red potatoes or even yellow potatoes. If the potatoes are a bit larger just slice them in half or quarter them when you go to cook in water. Then they will smash nicely.
